Back in 1989, in the months before the Berlin Wall came down, three Soviet navy ships paid a call on Norfolk Naval Base: the Slava Class Guided Missile Cruiser MARSHAL USTINOV (CG 088), the Guided Missile Destroyer OTLICHNYY (DDG 434), and the Replenishment Oiler GENRIKH GASANOV. The ships brought along performers, dancers, musicians and to make it a cultural exchange. I was playing in a professional concert band at the time, and our conductor arranged to have one of the Russian conductors lead our band. He conducted the Soviet national anthem, and then a rousing performance of the Russian Sailor’s Dance. Definitely one of the high points in my musical life.

Pretty good for a 31-year-old aircraft. Manufactured in 1961, now preserved on Celebrity Row at  Davis Monthan.

Awesome! Always neat to see Oppos with direct connections to events like that.
